After the butchery that was World War I, the fields of Europe were riddled with unexploded ordnance. In Belgium and the North of France, a very popular thing was to turn old shells into works of art.

Interesting. I've got some vases made from shells, dating back to that time, which were passed on to me as the history-geek in the family. I'm not sure when they date to, and they seem to be made of a coppery metal, the colour of those in the background. Making a clock out of one, that's something else, though! Great work, and thanks for sharing.
